REFERRALS & MEDICARE

Making access
simpler.

Guidance for people looking to access psychology and for GPs preparing a referral to Aberius Psychology.

01

Using Medicare

If you want to access Medicare rebates through Better Access, you'll need to meet eligibility criteria and have a valid referral.

This is commonly a GP or prescribed medical practitioner referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Referrals under qualifying psychiatrist assessment and management plans, or direct referrals from psychiatrists or paediatricians, may also be accepted.

02

Paying privately

People who are paying privately can generally access psychological services without a GP referral.

Appointments and suitability remain subject to availability and practice arrangements. Feel free to contact us with any general questions before getting started.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Referral questions,
answered.

Do all clients need a Mental Health Treatment Plan? +

No. A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan is a common Medicare pathway, but other eligible referral routes exist. People paying privately generally do not need a GP referral.

Does a referral guarantee Medicare eligibility? +

No. Medicare rebates depend on the patient's eligibility, the referral, the practitioner/provider arrangements, the service provided and relevant MBS rules. Please confirm before booking.

Can I upload a referral through this website? +

No. The public contact form deliberately does not accept medical records or attachments. Ask the practice to confirm secure referral delivery arrangements.

Can another clinician refer? +

Some referrals from psychiatrists or paediatricians qualify under Better Access. Other referrals can be helpful clinically but may not meet Medicare claiming requirements; check the relevant scheme before booking.
